WHITE CHRISTMAS arrives in glorious VistaVision 4K!

Review by John Larkin

WHITE CHRISTMAS in 4K is available at retailers everywhere

Paramount’s introduction of VistaVision in the mid-1950s, rivaling Twentieth Century Fox’s CinemaScope, marked a significant leap in cinematic presentation, offering superior image clarity and an expansive aspect ratio. Utilizing a horizontal film strip instead of the traditional vertical orientation, VistaVision allowed for greater image resolution, making it ideal for the burgeoning widescreen film format.

Irving Berlin’s WHITE CHRISTMAS (1954) directed by Michael Curtiz, was the first film to showcase this revolutionary technology, setting a new standard for visual storytelling. The stunning clarity and vibrant colors of VistaVision captured the holiday magic like never before, ensuring that WHITE CHRISTMAS was both a technical marvel and a timeless classic. Now, nearly 70 years later, the film’s 4K UHD release recaptures that original brilliance, delivering a viewing experience that rivals its debut.

The story follows Bob Wallace (Bing Crosby) and Phil Davis (Danny Kaye), two former soldiers turned successful entertainers, who team up with aspiring sister act Betty (Rosemary Clooney) and Judy Haynes (Vera-Ellen). Together, they plan to save a struggling Vermont inn owned by their former general, Major General Waverly (Dean Jagger). The film’s narrative is a heartwarming mix of romance, comedy, and holiday cheer, anchored by the performers’ undeniable charisma and chemistry.

Of course, the music is where WHITE CHRISTMAS truly shines. Featuring the songs of Irving Berlin, the soundtrack includes enduring hits like "Sisters," "Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep," and of course the most famous of all, "White Christmas." The choreography is equally dazzling, with elaborate dance sequences that bring energy and spectacle to the film. Each number is a perfect blend of Berlin’s lyrical genius and the cast’s magnetic performances.

Paramount’s 4K UHD release of WHITE CHRISTMAS is an absolute revelation! The disc showcases the full glory of VistaVision with an image so crisp and vibrant that it feels like the film was shot yesterday. The lush Technicolor palette is breathtaking, with reds, greens, and blues (Bing Crosby's eyes) practically leaping off the screen. Skin tones are natural and warmly lit, while the intricate details of costumes, set decorations, and even the snowy landscapes are rendered with stunning clarity. The fine layer of film grain is preserved, maintaining the organic quality of the original VistaVision presentation while benefiting from modern digital restoration techniques.

The disc’s Dolby Atmos soundtrack breathes new life into the film’s audio. Irving Berlin’s music is rich and full-bodied, with instruments and vocals given room to shine in the expanded soundstage. Dialogue is crisp and clear, never overshadowed by the music or ambient effects. The mix ensures that every lyric, from Crosby’s baritone croon to Clooney’s silky vocals, is rendered with perfect fidelity.

The Atmos mix also enhances the immersive quality of the film, with subtle environmental sounds—like bustling train stations or the rustle of holiday crowds—enveloping the viewer without ever becoming distracting. Fans of the original mono track will be pleased to find it included as well, offering a nostalgic option for purists.

WHITE CHRISTMAS has always been a holiday staple, but this 4K UHD release elevates it to a new level of appreciation. Paramount’s meticulous restoration honors the groundbreaking VistaVision format, ensuring that the film’s visual and musical charms remain as enchanting as they were in 1954. This release makes me even more excited for Warner Archives Collection's first 4K UHD release of the VISTAVISION lensed THE SEARCHERS (1956) due in late December.

Whether you’re a longtime fan or discovering it for the first time, this disc is an essential addition to any holiday collection and one of the best releases of 2024!
